HOW TO PREPARE CHINESE HERBAL DECOCTIONS

Container:

Your container must have a lid and be large enough to boil one packet of herbs. Best choices for containers are ceramic, clay, glass or stainless steel. Do NOT use aluminum, iron, copper or Teflon coated pots.

___ Precooking: Cook the smaller bag first for ______minutes in _____cups of water. Keep the herb and the liquid in the container and follow the cooking instructions below.

___ Add the smaller bag/teabag during the last _____minutes of the first cooking.

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Empty one bag/packet of herbs into the container. Add _____cups of cold water to the herbs. Soak the herbs for 15-30 minutes. (water should cover herbs by about 1 inch). Alternatively, cover herbs completely in the water making sure all herbs submerge in it. Suppress with a spoon to ensure.

  2. (1st cooking) Bring to a boil on a covered container. Reduce heat to medium-low (a slow boil) and cook until only half the liquid remains. This will take about 30 minutes. Strain liquid into a large glass jar or bowl.

  3. (2nd cooking) Add _____more cups of water to the same herbs. (water should cover herbs by about 1 inch) Cook again until half the liquid remains. Add this liquid to the liquid from the first cooking.

  4. Store tea in refrigerator and warm up before drinking.

  5. Drink _____cup in the morning and _____cup in the evening. Drink the tea 30 minutes before or 2 hours after a meal unless directed otherwise. Each bag of herbs will last _____day(s).
